For many years, the American dream has been defined by believing that hard work, smart choices, and perseverance can make things happen. While economic headlines are often focused on uncertainty, a closer look at today's millionaires tells a more encouraging story: The dream of building wealth remains very much alive.
According to Northwestern Mutual’s 2025 Planning & Progress Study, nearly 80 percent of American millionaires are self-made. Rather than inheriting their wealth, most built it through smart financial decisions, long-term planning, and consistent action.
Every millionaire’s journey is unique. The study shows several common habits that anyone can apply, regardless of where they’re on their financial journey.
The lesson isn’t that everyone needs to become a millionaire overnight. Wealth creation often follows a set of rules that are easy for many, but many people are unaware of these rules.
Success Starts With Clarity
One of the biggest differences between successful people and everyone else is not always money. It’s clarity.
Successful wealth builders tend to have a clear understanding of where they stand financially and where they want to go. They set goals, monitor progress, and make decisions with the future in mind.
Too often, people approach financial planning as a one-time event. Most successful people think of it as a process. They often look at what’s important, adjust to changing circumstances, and make changes when needed.
Wealth isn’t typically built through a few extraordinary decisions. Often, wealth is created through hundreds of small, intentional choices made consistently over decades, often with the help of a trusted financial planner.
Discipline Beats Perfection
The most encouraging thing from the research is that making money doesn’t need perfect skills.
Many people think successful investors have special abilities to predict markets or find the next big chance. Most long-term wealth is built through consistency, patience, and discipline.
Like the clients I work with, the millionaires in the study show that steady progress often matters more than perfect timing. My clients save regularly, invest consistently, and stay focused on long-term goals despite short-term distractions.
Markets will fluctuate. Economic cycles will come and go. Life will inevitably present unexpected challenges.
Those who successfully build wealth understand that being disciplined during periods of uncertainty is often just as important as opportunity during periods of growth.
Financial Advice Is a Common Denominator
The study also found that it’s important for financial professionals to develop trusted relationships with their clients. Nearly three-quarters of millionaires work with a financial advisor, compared to roughly one-third of the general population.
That statistic isn’t simply a reflection of wealth. It shows how important it is to have a partner who knows how to handle important money decisions.
Successful individuals recognize that they don’t need to have all the answers themselves. Whether it’s retirement planning, taxes, healthcare costs, or investing, financially successful people seek expert guidance when it can help them achieve better results.
Often, an advisor’s greatest value isn’t selecting investments. It helps clients remain focused, objective, and aligned with their long-term goals.
The best financial plans are often those people can trust and stick with through changing market conditions and life events.
The American Dream Is Still Attainable
The most encouraging thing from the 2025 Planning & Progress Study is that it’s still possible for those who are willing to work hard. Nearly 80 percent of millionaires identifying as self-made is more than just a statistic. It shows that money is still being made every day through planning, hard work, and smart choices.
The path won’t look the same for everyone. Different careers, life situations, and goals will shape each person’s journey.
But the underlying principles remain remarkably consistent.
Successful wealth builders seek clarity. They embrace discipline. They create plans. They use expert guidance. And they commit to the long game.
For those who adopt the same mindset, becoming a millionaire may not simply be a financial milestone. It can become the natural outcome of years of intentional decisions made in pursuit of a larger vision.
In that respect, the American Dream isn’t fading. It’s alive and well for those who are willing to plan for it.
